Why Norman Park?
Choosing a kindergarten is about more than finding a program that fits your schedule.
It is about finding a place where your child will feel known, supported and inspired to learn — and where your family feels genuinely part of the community.
At Norman Park Kindy, we believe our difference is found in the combination of relationships, community, nature, play and trust in children.
One unit. Two groups. One community.
Norman Park is a one-unit kindergarten with two groups, which means only one group of twenty-five children attends at a time.
This creates a calm, connected environment where children, families and educators can know one another well and where relationships have time to grow.
Children are not moving through a large centre with multiple rooms and groups operating at once. Each group experiences the kindergarten as their own familiar community, supported by a consistent teaching team and environment.
Across the week, our two groups are part of the one Norman Park Kindy community — sharing the same philosophy, spaces, traditions and strong sense of belonging.
A child-led, play-based program
Our curriculum grows from children’s interests, ideas, questions and relationships.
Children are given long periods of uninterrupted play, genuine opportunities to make choices and meaningful involvement in decisions about their day.
Educators bring professional knowledge and intentional teaching to this process — observing, listening, documenting, reflecting and extending learning in ways that are responsive to the children.
Space to explore
Our extensive natural grounds give children room to move, create, investigate and challenge themselves.
Children experience indoor and outdoor learning throughout the day, regular Bush Excursions, all-weather play and authentic opportunities to engage with real materials, tools and experiences.
We believe children learn deeply when they can experience the world rather than simply hear about it.
Relationships come first
Children learn best when they feel safe, known and that they belong.
Our educators invest deeply in relationships with children and work in genuine partnership with families.
The small, community-based nature of our kindergarten allows these relationships to become a genuine part of everyday life rather than something that happens around the edges of the program.
Children are trusted as capable
We believe children are competent people with ideas, rights and perspectives of their own.
They are supported to make decisions, solve problems, assess appropriate risk, develop independence and increasingly take responsibility for themselves, their belongings and their community.
We do not expect childhood to be perfect or challenge-free.
We see challenge, mistakes, negotiation and uncertainty as important opportunities for children to learn about themselves and others.
Community is part of the experience
Norman Park is a not-for-profit, community-managed kindergarten.
Our Parent Management Committee, educators and families work together to care for and strengthen the kindergarten.
Family participation has been part of Norman Park Kindy since its beginnings in 1962. Today, families continue to contribute in many different ways — through committee involvement, community events, working bees, fundraising, sharing skills and simply lending a hand when they can.
Participation looks different for every family, but the message children experience is powerful:
This is a place we all help to create.
Childhood matters here
Perhaps our greatest difference is that we value the kindergarten year for what it is — an important and meaningful part of childhood.
We absolutely support children to develop the confidence, skills and independence that will help them transition successfully to school.
But kindergarten is not simply preparation for what comes next.
It is a year for friendships, muddy clothes, big ideas, questions, challenge, creativity, laughter, belonging and discovery.
Childhood is happening now — and we believe it deserves to be valued.
Acknowledgment to Country: Kookaburras group
Thank you to the Jagera people, you made the land good. Now it's our turn to look after the grass, trees, flowers and air.
We need to show to the Jagera people that we are keeping the land clean for ourselves and them.
Acknowledgement to Country: Lorikeets group
Thank you to the Jagera people for looking after the land for us, before we were born. For taking care of this land and growing our land.
We will help and be kind and nice to the people, the animals, the birds, the bugs, the trees and plants and sun.
Thank you for our country, thank you for our world.
