Learning Through Play

Childhood is a time for wonder, discovery and possibility

At Norman Park Kindy, we believe children learn deeply when they have time, space and freedom to play, explore, wonder, investigate, create, take appropriate risks and develop their own ideas.

Our kindergarten program is child-led, play-based and open indoor–outdoor, allowing children to make meaningful choices about where, how and with whom they play.

Relationships sit at the heart of this learning. Our educators take time to know each child — their interests, ideas, strengths, family, culture and ways of being — and use this knowledge to thoughtfully support and extend their learning.

We see children as capable and competent people with rights, ideas and perspectives of their own. Children are encouraged to make decisions, contribute ideas, express their views and influence what happens within their kindergarten day.

Their questions might lead to an investigation that lasts an afternoon or many weeks. A discovery outdoors might move inside to the art table. A construction might become a collaborative project. A conversation might lead to an excursion, experiment or an entirely unexpected direction.

Rather than following a predetermined program, our curriculum grows with the children.

Play, inquiry and discovery

Play is central to childhood and to learning at Norman Park Kindy.

Through play, children test ideas, solve problems, negotiate relationships, communicate, imagine, create and make sense of their world. Importantly, children are given time for their play to become complex.

Our program isn't divided into short blocks of adult-directed activities. Children can become deeply involved in an idea, return to something they began earlier, work alongside others and allow their thinking to develop over time.

Educators observe closely, listen and respond. Sometimes this means joining the play, asking a question or introducing a new possibility. At other times, the most valuable thing an educator can do is protect the time and space children need to pursue their own thinking.

Children's voice, agency & rights

Children have a right to be heard and to have their views taken seriously in matters that affect them.

At Norman Park Kindy, children's voices are therefore not something we simply collect — they influence what happens here.

Children contribute to decisions about their play and learning, their environment and aspects of their kindergarten day. Educators listen to children's words, but also recognise the many other ways children communicate their thinking — through play, drawing, movement, construction, behaviour, gesture and relationships.

We support children to develop agency: to make choices, express preferences, negotiate with others, solve problems and increasingly recognise both their own rights and the rights of others.

This means our program cannot look exactly the same from one year to the next.

Each group of children helps shape the kindy they experience.

Children aren't all ready to do the same thing at the same time.

Our open indoor–outdoor program recognises this.

Children have extended opportunities to move between our indoor and outdoor environments, choosing spaces and experiences that support their play, ideas and needs.

Our environment is intentionally designed to offer possibilities rather than prescribe what children should do. Open-ended materials can become many things. Spaces change in response to children's interests and investigations. Natural and recycled materials sit alongside more traditional resources.

And because children's bodies have different needs throughout the day, there is no set whole-group rest time. Opportunities for quiet, relaxation and rest are available and responsive to individual children.
